Who We Are
Family Promise of the Great Rivers is a family homeless shelter offering food, clothing, life skills, and community. Our mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. What began as a small outreach in Summit, NJ, over 30 years ago is now a National Initiative.

Why We Do It
There is a severe shortage of affordable housing in America. Our community experiences the same disparities made worse by rising rents and stagnant wages. Most families would be devastated by an unforeseen expense or emergency and could easily be thrust into a homeless situation. Our vision is a nation in which every family has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.

WHAT WE DO
Prevention and Diversion
We are there when a family’s homelessness is imminent, and we work to avoid a family needing our shelter service. We help them navigate to appropriate resources, negotiate with landlords, and identify barriers and priorities.
Shelter Program
Our Shelter is set on a rotational model using different sites within our community throughout a 90 day period. We serve only famillies who are vetted to ensure safetey for volunteers and other families. While we try to make a very comfortable environment for our families we also adhere to a very structured and guided approach.
Stabilization
Services and support after shelter helps families remain housed. These structured programs provide continued support and reduce the risk of a family’s re-entry into homelessness. This kind of support can last up to one to two years depending on the needs of each individual family.
Family Services
We offer a selection of family services to the families in our programs. Ranging from transportation assistance to Tenant Based Rental Assistance, as well as in person and online courses in job seeking, budgeting, and good tenancy practices.
Community Services
A core value of Family Promise is to promote strong community ties by bringing people together. Either to create awareness, achieve a common goal, or even entertainment. often what we do incorporates all three. Our goal is always to create a positive change for everyone.
